SmartDesign Group nears completion on JFK project; airport design experience comes through at Terminal 4.

(Vancouver, BC and New York, NY) August 13, 2009 – SmartDesign Group was appointed by Select Service Partners (SSP) America to apply its airport design experience to the development of a flaship food and beverage offering at JFK International Airport’s Terminal 4.

As construction nears completion, JFK Terminal 4 is now an exciting and dynamic environment that extends the New York City dining experience to the airport. And with a variety of restaurants such as the Palm Bar & Grille, Seafood Bar by Caviar House & Prunier, and Tigin Irish Pub & Restaurant, the program is sure to satisfy the terminal’s global customers and create its position as a high-quality dining environment.

“Location, location, location.” That’s what Jon Sunderland, President of SmartDesign Group, claims to be the key to a successful and profitable food and beverage operation.

“A strategic approach to location will help operators maximize real estate, optimize exposure, and meet the needs of the diverse customer, all without negatively impacting the airport design.”

The terminal currently services 35 international and domestic airlines carrying nearly 9 million passengers per year. In recent years, terminal services and amenities have been unable to keep up with growing passenger demands. SmartDesign Group worked closely with operators, SSP America, and the management company, JFK IAT, to create greater value for the terminal and help to recover lost revenue opportunities.

The entire JFK project was a collaborative effort from sourcing initial locations, concept, development, through to implementation. Working closely with SSP America, SmartDesign Group identified the number of spaces and the optimal product mix to support the growing needs of passengers. Recognizing the appropriate international, national and local brands helped the team to meet JFK’s goal of providing a culinary program that truly reflects New York City.
